6 - 8 GRADES

*Red folders will be sent home every Wednesday with corrected papers from all junior high teachers as well as any notes from the office.  They are to be signed and returned to school no later than Friday.

*Book Condition Forms were sent sent home with the students on Monday, August 15.  There are FIVE books--Regligion, Literature, Science, Social Studies and Math--that the kids are responsible for keeping in good condition this school year.  The students are advised to bring home their books and look through each book with an adult at home, listing the overall condition of the books and any obvious marks.  The forms are to be signed and returned NO LATER than Friday, August 26.  Please return them ASAP, as the consequence for not returning them is a loss of recess.

*Homework planners/Assignment notebooks are to be filled out by each student EVERYDAY and brought home.  Teachers routinely write the homework on the board and discuss the directions and due dates.  However, it is the students' responsibility to list their classroom work, including due dates, and pack their backpacks accordingly.  Websites are intended as a back-up, not as the primary way the students are keeping track of their assignments.

*Silent reading books should be with EVERY student EVERY day.  As listed in their morning procedures, the students are given time every morning to read from a book of their choice.  At various other times during the day, the students may have a few minutes to read their books and work toward the goal of AT LEAST 30 minutes of reading per day.  I am more than happy to lend a student a book; however, they are expected to be sitting and reading from 8:00-8:15am every morning.  That is not the time to look for a book.

*Weekly Spelling:  grades 6-8
Each week, grades 6-8 will receive a spelling list on the first day of the school week (usually Monday) and turned in on Thursday of the same week.  In addition, spelling lists will be tested on Fridays.  Each list will work on a specific spelling skill and should assist in the students' word choice when both writing and speaking.  Beginning Second Trimester, weekly spelling tests have had an application component.  The students will need to show me that they understand more about the spelling words than just how to spell them.  They will be asked to define them-- including parts of speech-- use them correctly in sentences, find rhyming words, use the letters in the spelling words to create new words, etc. At the end of each spelling test, the students will be required to correctly complete a task for FIVE of their weekly spelling words.  In addition, the students have the option of completing the task for five MORE of their words each week that will be added to their spelling test as extra credit.

*Language Arts Openers: grades 6-8

This school year, we will be learning, reviewing and practicing many different ELA skills weekly.  The format we will be using to practice these various skills are called Language Arts Openers.  The students have been given a written set of directions as well as a verbal explanation and time to practice in class.  Essentially, the daily practice will focus on grammar, spelling, vocabulary, writing, etc. and provide the kids with the opportunity to practice and keep their skills sharp.  Each ELA Opener will be sent home on Mondays and turned in on Fridays.  They are each worth 10 points.
